Frugal party planning

I've had a party planned for about 4 weeks now- never thinking things would be so tight financially. It was always going to be a cheap party, but now some creative thinking is going to be required!

The theme is summer- because boy, do we need some summertime in New England. It will NOT stop snowing!!

Any thoughts are welcome- especially menu ideas!

Were you planning on serving alcoholic beverages? If so, you could implement a BYO policy.

Chips, salsa, and guacamole are summery and fairly inexpensive.

You can get the store-brand versions of most popular sodas for 75 cents or less.

I hear dollar stores have some pretty decent decorations, if you're planning on decorating at all.

I'm a big believer in BYO and potluck. Especially in times like these...parties aren't an opportunity to eat free food at someone else's house (and expense), but to get together with friends and SHARE what we have. Maybe have each guest bring "their" perfect summer food and you provide the staples (and your fave, of course).

well its not exactly summer, but could you do kind-of a cinco de mayo, tropical vacation theme, and make a taco bar for the main course? you could add in some mexican rice, chips and salsa, and voila!

is it a kids party? maybe inflatable beach balls as a party favor. Cheap at the dollar store!

I second the chips, guac, salsa, bean dip.. all relatively easy and not so expensive.

A frugal party isn't exactly the easiest thing to do. A frugal living isn't the easiest thing to do either. But this is the time when we have to save as much money as we can, because nothing is sure anymore.
