Starting to think about next year

Now that I have a little bit of closure about this year, I'm starting to think about next year. This is the first time I have felt so hopeful and so motivated about a new year in a long, long time- I really have that "new beginning" feeling. So far, these are the goals I've come up with for 2009:
  • Pay off another 20% of my debt
  • Continue with the vegetable garden for another year
  • Have a tag sale!!!!!
  • Start my four year old on an allowance with a chore chart, to begin teaching him about money

I'm sure there will be more to come, but that is what I've come up with so far. If you have a great goal for 2009, I'd love to hear it!

I'd highly recommend the book Raising Financially Fit Kids. It talks about when to teach different money lessons for each age. It is a really easy read and great format for future reference. (I got it from Paperback Swap so I can keep it for awhile after reading a library copy.)

We met some great financial goals this year. They were to:
* Increase our emergency savings from 4 months living expenses to 6 months.
* Pay off car (it was at zero percent but still debt)
* Finish decorating our house

DH and I meet on Jan 1 every year to discuss our goals so I'll come back and post them. I think most people think you should only consider financial goals when you are in debt, but we always meet about our financial goals every year to make sure our priorities are in line with where our money goes.

Laura,

I really like yhow your goals are sort of "after debt" goals. I think it's a really good point that just because you're not in debt doesn't mean you shouldn't have goals to work towards. I think the reason most of us got into debt in the first place was a lack of understanding about what we had and what we wanted.

I'm really dying to get rid of my debt so that I can start making my life goals happen!
